I do not know what is your database. In General, I think the steps are (of course read the instructions of the vendor):
- take a backup of the database
- showdown normally the database
- upgrade the database software
- open and test the database
If you upgrade online the disk software is going to have the new version and the software of the database in the memory, buffers, process the old database software.
