failure is when we have

  1. harware failure
  2. hyman error
  3. hacker activity
  4. physical disaster
  5. software error
  6. and more

and the db is going to not operate

recovery is when we

  • restore the db files (data + system)
  • and maybe logs + archives

and bring the db to the moment before failure
